ONCE and Mondragon Unibertsitatea award the best projects to improve the lives of people with low vision

The three winning projects are by students from Mondragon Unibertsitatea and the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea

The ONCE in collaboration with the International Entrepreneurship Unit of the Business Faculty of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, Mondragon Team Academy, has awarded the 2nd edition of the Gure Begirada Competition, aimed at students who are studying for degrees at universities in the Basque Autonomous Community. The competition has the collaboration of the Basque Government and the European Union. A total of 111 students from Mondragon Unibertsitatea and the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea took part.

The aim of this competition is to provide solutions to different challenges that people with low vision face on a daily basis, thus improving the lives of these people. To this end, the contest establishes teamwork, developing skills such as innovation, creativity or critical thinking. 

The contest establishes three prizes for a total value of 1,800 euros for the three best projects. Specifically, an endowment of 1,000 euros for the first project, another 500 euros for the second prize and 300 euros for the third project chosen.

The 2nd Gure Begirada Contest has awarded the 1st prize to the team formed by students of the Degree in Advertising and Public Relations of the UPV/EHU who have designed an APP for accessible shopping for everyone called Cleverway. The 2nd prize went to leinners from the Degree in Entrepreneurial Leadership and Innovation (LEINN) of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, who have designed NFC tags for people with low vision to identify objects. For its part, the 3rd prize consisted of a vibrating control as a guide in hospital spaces for people with visual impairment, which has also been designed by students of the LEINN degree.

 

Projects aimed at improving the lives of blind people

The jury was formed by Rafael Ledesma, President of the Territorial Council of ONCE-Euskadi; Juan Carlos Andueza, Territorial Delegate of ONCE-Euskadi; Marian Olabarrieta, Director of Social Services of the Basque Government; Aurora Madariaga, Director of the Chair of Leisure and Disability of the University of Deusto; Jokin Gorozika, Professor of the Department of Graphic Expression and Engineering Projects at the Bilbao School of Engineering, UPV/EHU; and Ziortza Olano, Coordinator of the Bilbao Berrikuntza Faktoria and Team Coach of the Mondragon Team Academy at Mondragon Unibertsitatea Enpresagintza.

The Jury has issued its decision considering criteria such as the innovative nature of the project, its social and digital impact or its technical and economic viability, among others.

In the II University Contest Gure Begirada, a total of 111 students registered and organized in a total of 32 teams, presented 22 projects. All participants had to respond to the following challenges: (1) Access to health care for people with low vision, (2) Autonomous life at home and (3) Latent needs of people with residual vision.

The Gure Begirada University Contest, in addition to awarding cash prizes to the winners, encourages them to develop and put them into practice for the benefit of blind and low vision people.
